Welcome

Thank you for visiting the official website for Magic Birds, a Chattanooga, TN-based band made up of Scott Bruce and Ben Ezell. Delivering their own brand of Americana music, the duo blends together elements of classic country, bluegrass and folk, producing a style of music that exemplifies the sound that has helped shape their lives. Check out the site, see where the next performance will be and take a listen to a few tunes. Hope you like what you hear!

What's in the Mix for 2026!

While we have only played a handful of live shows in 2026 so far, we are very exciting for what we have going on behind the scenes and for what we have coming up! We are currently working on recording our 3rd album, and we decided to produce this one ourselves. While that is a daunting task we have taken upon ourselves, it has proven to be very fun so far and we are excited about the progress and the new batch of songs we will be sharing with you soon. Also, we have some very fun shows coming up this summer. We'll be performing around the Chattanooga area some, with more of those potentially popping up on the calendar soon, but we would also love to invite you to catch us out on the road as we embark on our 3rd Annual Summer Beer Run. We are returning to some of our favorites, and we added some new stops to the mix this year. We can't wait to do it again this summer and we hope to see you out there on the run!

Celebrating 10 Years of Magic Birds!

In May of 2015, we released our debut album, The Music of Benjamin Bruce, while also officially introducing the world to Magic Birds. So this May, we will be celebrating TEN YEARS of Magic Birds! Where did the time go?!? We never expected the embrace we have received from so many friends over the years. While we could never thank you enough, we would like to offer this special token of our appreciation:

Visit our online store throughout the month of May 2025 and purchase a vinyl copy of our sophomore album, Twenty-Three, and you will get $10 off AND a free CD copy of our debut album, The Music of Benjamin Bruce!! That is a $40 value for only $20! And to make it even sweeter, you can get this special for only $15 at our live shows in May.

Thank you for continuing to hang with Magic Birds. We don’t have plans to stop anytime soon, but we could not let this milestone pass without doing something special!

Gearing Back Up...

After taking the first few months off from playing shows in 2025, we are gearing back up to get things started soon, with a few shows on our calendar in March, followed by a list of shows randomly booked already through September of this year. We cannot wait to get back out there and play some music for you all!

A few things to add:

 - Jeremy Sharp has been playing with us on the upright bass for almost a year now, and we have been so thankful to have him with us, laying down the back-end of our sound that we really never had before live. Also, he broke out his electric bass in a practice the other day, so stay tuned for that to make an appearance sometime soon at a live show near you!

- You may have seen Alex Keiss playing electric guitar with us on a few shows late in 2024. Well, we are lucky enough to have him sticking around for more! He will not be with us on the 2 March dates, but he plans to be with us for the shows we have scheduled in April and May, and who knows what will come next. He is in 2-4 other bands and projects so we are unfortunatley having to share him. But we are excited for what he brings to our sound and can't wait to keep collaborating with him!

- We are in the early stages of getting prepared to record a 3rd album. We do not plan to take quite as long as we did on the 2nd one, but we are not quite ready to get in the studio just yet. We shouldn't say too much as this point as we are still in the planning stages, so stay tuned for more news on this project in the months to come!

- May 2025 will mark TEN YEARS OF MAGIC BIRDS. It doesn't seem like it has been that long, but the math tells us otherwise. Look for some announcments of some things we cook up to celebrate 10 years later this year!

We look forward to seeing you all out there at our shows very soon and thank you for your continued support of Magic Birds!

Winding down...

It has been a little over a year since we released our sophomore album “Twenty-Three” and we truly appreciate all of the positive feedback we have received from the album. Now as we wind down to the end of 2024, we tend to reflect on the great times we have had. In 2023, we were lucky to have Drew Streip playing on the mandolin with us for nearly a year before he and his family made the move to Vermont. Then at Nightfall last year, our buddies TJ Greever and Tony Neely sat in with us for that show. This year in 2024, you may have seen Lew Card playing mandolin with us, Jerermy Sharpe on the upright bass or even more recently, Alex Keiss on the electric guitar. Coming up soon in December, we will be closing out the year with 3 really fun performances that we look forward to, so plan on coming out and seeing who may be sitting in with us on those shows. Also, we are already discussing a 3rd album, and you may have even seen us play a few of our newest songs at our shows. Whether lending an instrument to enrich our music, coming out to our shows, purchasing merch or wearing your hats and shirts out in public, we want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts--2024 has been a great year for Magic Birds and we cannot wait to fly into 2025 with you all soon!

New Magic Birds album FINALLY dropping!!

The time has FINALLY come. We have finished our new album and it will be released on Friday 8.11.23. It will be available to download and stream on all online platforms, we will have it here on our site for ordering, and we will have a handful of live shows to celebrate the release.
Here's more about the album:

On their sophomore album, Twenty-Three, Magic Birds tapped into the musical genius of Chattanooga, TN's own Nick Lutsko for the production. Keeping true to their Americana style of storytelling and mix of classic country, bluegrass, folk and soul, the direction of this album was to present their newest batch of songs with a full-band sound. With Lutsko at the helm, the band sought out many of their musician friends around Chattanooga to help them accomplish what they were searching for. The album features appearances by Amber Fults, Matt Shigekawa, Dan Pinson, Randy Steele, Deron Stevens, John Boulware, Drew Streip, and of course, Nick Lutsko--and not to mention mastering by Charles Allison and artwork by Steven Ratajczyk. And after many years of tweaking, perfecting and swimming through life's challenges, Twenty-Three is finally ready to present to the world and Scott Bruce and Ben Ezell of Magic Birds could not be happier! So turn it on, turn it up and take a musical journey with Magic Birds through the songs of Twenty-Three.

Catch us in 2023!

We are late getting an update to you this year, but man, 2023 has been a blast for us so far and it's just getting started. We have a lot of shows on the calendar for this Spring & Summer, and the best news is, it looks like we will FINALLY be releasing our 2nd album this year. We know, we have said that quite a few times over the years, but this time, we really mean it! The recording process is over, so now we just work on the preparation of getting everything to you in the best possible format we can! More to come on this in the very near future. Until then, come see us live--we'd love to hang out with you!!

We can't wait to see YOU throughout 2022!

We have eased back into live performances. We did a few shows in the fall of 2021 and we played an amazing show in Iva, SC in early March of this year. But now the floodgates have opened and we are back at it--and we cannot wait! We will be performing at the 2022 Cumberland Trail Spring Festival in late April, we'll be Cherry Street Tavern's Artist in Residency every Thursday night during the month of July, we are headed to Clayton, GA in July and then headed to Ben's hometown of Marshall, NC in late September.

We could go on and on because we are so excited about these upcoming performances, but why don't you just head over to our SHOWS page to learn more. We hope to see you out there somewhere!!

However, they are now back and better than ever, and we look forward to returning and experiencing the family-feel that is transcendent in the area of Hot Springs! Not too far from where Ben grew up, we hope to once again see a ton of familiar faces at this one!!
